Le mot d’adieu des éditeurs 


his is the 14th and last issue that we have edited since taking over this responsibility in 1990. The 

International Numismatic Newsletter (acronym INN rather than INL) bears the title coined by Michael 

Bates in 1987 when he tried to make it more “journalistic”. It however still retains the structure and 
headings devised by its founder, Dr. H.A. Cahn, who edited the first 13 issues from 1980 to 1986. In the course 
of our eight years, we have tried to do our best to convey the information we received, as well as that we had 
asked for, about events deemed of general interest, balancing ancient and modern topics and aiming at building 
a “global link” between numismatists all over the world. The impression we had of “speaking into the desert” 
with our first issues, admittedly rather unprofessional and dull, progressively faded as a livelier lay-out and 
more generous illustration began to increase our readers” interest. Testimonies of their satisfaction — even 
reproaches and corrigenda — have been and are the best reward for our efforts. The rest of the Bureau of the 
INC would like to pay tribute to the time and energy devoted on the one hand by E.A. Arslan and the whole 
staff in the Civico Museo Archeologico in Milan in preparing and updating the files and mailing twice a year 
some 1300 copies of the INN and the questionnaire to some 80 countries, thanks to the generous support of the 
Comune, and on the other hand to C. Morrisson’s role as secretary both of the scientific and practical field. 


The present editors have appreciated this opportunity of getting insight into the daily life of the numismatic 
community, its successes and achievements, its crises and difficulties especially in times of financial 
restrictions, its increased involvement in introducing non-specialists to a better knowledge of coinage and 
monetary affairs. 


In this issue, besides articles about the imminent International Congress in Berlin, and about the preparations 
of the European Monetary Union (a major numismatic and monetary event, whatever one thinks about the 
decision), you will notice the growing importance of the multimedia numismatic activities and the appearance 
of a new heading on that theme (first mentioned in INN 26 Summer 1995). The Bureau has just agreed to set 
up an INC home page. The address, when it is ready, will be advertised on the ANS home page (address, 
below, p.8). The time is not yet ripe, however, to contemplate a purely electronic mode of conveying 
information and we look forward to the continuation of /NN . Its next issue will be in spring 1998 after new 
editors have been appointed, following the election of the new Bureau of the INC at the Berlin Congress in 
September. 


We apologise for the delay in mailing INN 29 and the questionnaire due to financial restrictions in December 
1996 as well as for the possible errors in the information given here. We remind our readers that the 
Newsletter has up to now been distributed free of charge to more than a thousand addresses all over the 
world, thanks to the generous secretarial help and free mailing in Milan. Any contribution to its publication 
and distribution, which amounts to some $ 1500, would be welcome. It should be sent, preferably by

Dans son rapport le Président a exprimé ses regrets 
de n'avoir pu trouver de solution permettant de 
soutenir la participation des institutions-membres en 
difficultés financieres. Elle a souligné l'importance 
des efforts consentis, grace à la saine gestion du 
Trésorier, M.L. Villaronga, en faveur de la 
communication (le Compte rendu , dont le n? spécial 
1996 avec l'historique de la CIN par К. Weiller sera 
exceptionnellement distribué à tous les congressistes; 
la Newsletter bisannuelle, l'aide à la publication des 
Actes de Bruxelles) et des autres dépenses d'intérét 
général (bourse annuelle, créée en 1994; aide aux 
congressistes). 


A Vordre du jour figuraient les rapports sur les 
différentes activités placées sous le patronage de la 
CIN. La Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum a vu la 
publication de deux volumes (Great Britain. London . 
British Museum IX.1 : The Black Sea réimpr. de l'éd. 
originale de 1993 et /talia, Milano. Civiche Raccolte 
Archeologiche e Numismatiche IV: Lucania - 
Bruttium, parte 1, Lucania par N. Vismara ) et le 
Comité britannique a exprimé l'intention d'élargir son 
projet de base de données, incluant des images, à des 
monnaies d'autre provenance que la SNG elle-méme, 
catalogues de vente, fouilles etc. Le Lexikon 
iconographicum mythologiae classicae est en voie 
d'achèvement et constituera un instrument de travail 
remarquable; son conseil envisage de continuer le 
projet par la publication d'un Thesaurus cultus et 
rituum antiquorum.. Deux numéros deNumismatic 
Literature sont parus (136, Septembre 1996 et 137, 
mars 1997). La contribution francaise, interrompue 
depuis trop d'années va reprendre sous la 
responsabilité de M. Amandry, M. Bompaire et F. 
Thierry, celle de la Pologne avec M. Mielczyarek. 
L'ensemble des notices est en cours d'indexation 
cumulative consultable sur Internet (voir ci-dessous, 
p. 00). Le Comité informatique de la CIN a publié 
une nouveau n* de la Coins and Computers 
Newsletter et a proposé au Bureau d'installer, gräce à 
l'hospitalité du serveur de l'ANS (v. adresse ci- 
dessous, p. 8), une page concernant la CIN. La CIN a 
enfin accordé son patronage à la Sylloge Nummorum 
Sassanidorum , projet animé par R. Gyselen et M. 
Alram dont le premier volume paraitra en 1998. 

La bourse de voyage annuelle a été attribuée à un 
chercheur indien, Shailendra BANDHARE (Bombay), 
pour une étude du monnayage des Satavahanas (2* s. 
av.- 2* s. ap. J.-C.) 


W.E. Metcalf a fait rapport au nom du comité ad hoc 
constitué au sein du Bureau (qui comprenait A. 
Burnett, K. Jonsson et S. Suchodolski) sur la 
procédure suivie pour l'attribution des bourses d'aide 
aux congressistes. 40 bourses de 700 DEM seront 
distribuées. Les bénéficiaires ont été avertis des le 20 
mai d'avoir à contacter le trésorier pour lui 
communiquer leurs coordonnées bancaires. 17 ne 
l'avaient pas encore fait le 10 mai. Sans réponse de 
leur part le 15 juin leur bourse sera attribuée aux 
candidats classés à leur suite par le comité. 

L'ordre du jour de l'Assemblée générale de la CIN a 
été mis au point. 11 prévoit notamment le vote de 
modifications aux statuts et l'élection du nouveau 
Bureau. Les membres de la CIN recevront la 
convocation et Toutes Tes informations nécessaires 
avant le 30 juin. Pour faciliter la plus large 
participation, cette Assemblée ne se tiendra plus le 


amedi comme précédemment, mais le jeudi 11.9. 
entre 13.30 et 15.30 dans la Salle du Conseil de 
l'Université, aucune communication ou conférence 


n'ayant lieu à ce moment-là. Un seul représentant раг 


institution: membre sera admis, Seules les institutions 
à Jour de leur cotisation 1997 pourront participer au 
vote. 


Comme de coutume, le Bureau s'est réuni en 
commun avec le Comité d'organisation du Congrés 
sous la présidence du Professeur Bernd Kluge. 
Participaient en outre à cette réunion les 
représentants des agences organisatrices et de 
l'Université, du Verband der Deutschen Münzhändler 
(Dr. H. Lanz, Münich), de la Deutsche 
Numismatische Gesellschaft (Herr Trapp, Dusseldorf) 
et le trésorier de l'AINP (Herr Künker, Osnabrück). 
Celui-ci a déclaré que l'AINP acceptait de prendre en 
charge également le supplément de coüt du Survey 
(env. 1595) résultant du dépassement du nombre de 
pages prévu (env. 980 au lieu de 800). Les 
bibliotheques pourront elles aussi bénéficier du prix 
réduit de 50 DEM (au lieu de 148) accordé aux 
congressistes et doivent s'adresser des maintenant au 
diffuseur des publications de l'AINP (Mevius 
Numismbook Internationale BV, Oosteinde 97, NL- 
7671 AT, Pays-Bas, Fax : +31 546 561 352). 


Pour chaque contribution, le ou les auteurs recevront 
25 tirés-à-part mais devront acquérir le volume s'ils le 
désirent, le budget ne permettant pas sa distribution 
gratuite. Le Dr Arnold (directeur du Cabinet de 
Dresde), invité, a décrit les mesures prises pour 
l'excursion en Saxe le 13 septembre (visites des 
musées, réception offertes etc.). Pour les nouvelles

The XII International 
Numismatic 

Congress - Berlin, 
September 8 - 12, 1997 


On the occasion of the joint meeting of the 
Organisation Committee with the Bureau of the 
International Numismatic Commission held in Berlin 
on 13 May 1997 the following report about the 
Congress preparation was given by Professor B. Kluge. 
Scientific programme: 379 papers and 18 Posters 
have been accepted and confirmed. There are 12 
plenary conferences (1 hour each) and 367 short 
papers of 20 minutes each followed by 10 minutes 
discussion in the various sections (General, 30; 
Ancient numismatics, 162; Medieval, 73; Modern, 37, 
Oriental, 41; Medals, 23). Due to this considerable 
number new papers cannot be accepted. To 
accommodate these papers in the available time, 12 
to 15 papers will take place simultaneously, out of 
which 5 of 6 in the Ancient section alone. The authors 
of these papers represent 44 different countries. The 
following round tables/workshops will be organised: 
Museum and Science; Computers and Numismatics; 
Coin hoards and coin finds; Medals; Oriental 
numismatics (divided into Islam, Southern Asia/India, 
Far East), as well as a panel discussion on 
numismatics from the point of view of museums, 
universities, the coin trade and coin collectors. All the 
abstracts of the conferences and accepted papers will 
be published in a book which will be distributed to 
participants with other relevant informations at their 
arrival at the Congress.

Congress will conclude with a dinner cruise in 
relaxed atmosphere on board of the “Weiße Flotte" 
On Friday 12, all-day bus excursions, either to 
Potsdam or to Dresden and Kónigstein in Saxonia are 
planned 

Numismatic events: During the Congress the annual 
assembly of ICOMON and the award of the 1997 
IAPN Book prize will take place as well as the 
General assembly of INC where the new Bureau will 
be elected. A book stand will be set where more than 
500 books will be available. Authors and institutions 
wishing to present their publications there should 
send to the Münzkabinett in Berlin a list which will 
be forwarded to the responsible bookseller. 

The "Survey of Numismatic Research" amounting to 
some 900 pages in one volume will be available in 
due time for the congress. Thanks to the support of 
IANP the special price of DM 50 for congress 
participants and libraries will be maintained in spite of 
the increased cost. Libraries should order the book 
now from the IANP correspondent (Mevius 
Numisbooks International BV, Oosteinde 97, NL-7671 
AT Vriezenveen, Pays-Bas, Fax 44-31 546 561 352). 
Other publications: essays (monographies) on Kunst 
und Technik der Münze und Medaille. Das Beispiel 
Berlin (Deutsche Gesellschaft für Medaillenkunst/ 
Staatliche Museen zu Berlin), on Brandenburg coins 
of the 13th and 14th centuries (Numismatische 
Gesellschaft zu Berlin) will be published on the 
occasion of the Congress. Periodicals like 
Geldgeschichtliches Nachrichten, Numismatisches 
Nadhrichtenblatt and Wiadomosci Numizmatyczne 
(Polish Numismatic News) offer special issues as 
well. 

Medal: The official medal of the congress in Berlin 
created by the medallist Wilfried Fitzenreiter has 
already been struck in bronze (see fig.). Participants 
of the congress may acquire it for DM 60,00 
(including presentation box and accompanying text) 
Grants and financial support:40 grants of DM 700 
have been offered by the INC, 21 of DM 500 by the 
Numismatische Kommission Deutschland to 
participants with accepted and confirmed papers 
Other grants will be offered by the Deutsche 
Numismatische Gesellschaft, the Verband der 


Deutschen Münzenhändler and the Humboldt 
Foundation 





Registration: the agencies in charge of the technical 
organisation, the Professional Congress and 
Marketing Agency GmbH (PCMA) and Congress 
Consult GmbH have up to now received 440 
registrations from participants from 39 countries. For 
further registrations, participants are reminded and 
requested to use the lour-page registration form that 
can be obtained from the organiser. Bank charges 
and exchange costs must be met by participants. To

Le 13 décembre 1996, lors du Conseil européen de 
Dublin, les futurs billets en euro ont été présentés aux 
chefs d'Etat et de gouvernement, puis dévoilés au 
public. Ils avaient été choisis le 3 décembre par 
Conseil de l'Institut Monétaire Européen, compos:

des gouverneurs des banques centrales des quinze 
pays membres de l'Union européenne 
La présentation des maquettes des sept coupures 
(5,10, 20, 50, 100, 200 et 500 euro) marque la fin du 
processus de sélection engagé depuis plusieurs 
années et comprenant de nombreuses étapes parm 
lesquelles il faut distinguer 

le choix des thémes : à partir des travaux d'un 
groupe consultatif d'experts (historiens d'art

15 états membres, deux themes ont été retenus: 
"Époques et styles en Europe" évoquant l'héritage 
culturel de l'Europe, l'autre theme consistant en un 
dessin moderne ou abstrait; 

- le concours graphique lancé le 12 février 1996 et 
clos le 13 septembre 1996 (voir INN 28, p. 6). 27 
séries de maquettes sur le premier théme et 17 sur le 
second ont été réalisées; 

- la présélection opérée par un jury composé 
d'experts indépendants : les 26 et 27 septembre 1996 
cinq séries de maquettes ont été retenues sur chacun 
des deux themes; 

- le sondage d’opinion sur les maquettes 
présélectionnées : l'Institut EOS Gallup Europe a 
effectué un sondage auprés de quelque 2000 
personnes représentatives du public en général mais 
aussi des professionnels manipulant les billets comme 
les caissiers de banque et les commercants; 

- le choix du conseil de l'IME : sur ces bases ainsi 
que sur les observations techniques sur 
l'imprimabilité des maquettes faites par le groupe de 
travail “billets” de l'IME, le Conseil de l'IME a choisi 
le graphisme inspiré du thème “Epoques et styles en 
Europe". Les trois éléments architecturaux 
prédominants (fenétres, portails et ponts) représentent 
les styles qui caractérisent sept “époques” de la 
culture européenne, le classique, le roman, le 
gothique, la Renaissance, le baroque et le rococo, 
l'architecture utilisant le fer et le verre, l'architecture 
moderne du 20e siècle. Ce graphisme symbolise la 
naissance de la nouvelle Europe unifiée, dépositaire 
d'un héritage commun en méme temps que la vision 
d'un avenir commun pour le siècle prochain, c'est-à- 
dire le nouveau millénaire. Les motifs ne doivent pas 
reproduire des éléments existants mais sont 
représentatifs des styles que l'on rencontre dans une 
grande partie de l'Europe. 

Les fenétres et les portails au recto de chaque billet 
symbolisent l'ouverture et la coopération au sein de 
l'Union dont les douze étoiles sont également 
reproduites. Au verso, le pont caractérise la période 
de l'histoire évoquée par la coupure. La série des 
constructions reproduites va du pont de bateaux 
rudimentaire au pont suspendu de l'époque moderne. 
Par métaphore, le pont symbolise le lien qui unit les 
peuples européens entre eux mais aussi l'E urope au 
reste du monde. 

Les autres motifs apparaissant sur les billets sont le 
nom EURO écrit en caracteres romains et grecs, le 
drapeau de l'Union européenne qui pourrait étre 
remplacé ultérieurement, si l'on décidait de le faire 


figurer sur les billets, par un signe national distinctif 
les initiales de la Banque centrale européenne 
reproduites dans leurs cinq variantes (BCE, ECB, EZB, 
EKT, EKP); la signature du président de la BCE, 
positionnée à cóté des initiales de celle-ci; la 
représentation du continent européen. 
Les travaux á venir portent sur la transformation des 
maquettes en billets imprimables et dureront jusqu'en 
juillet 1997. Puis s'engagera la "création" qui 
consiste à transformer les maquettes dites finales en 
plaques types. Ce processus de création, la réalisation 
des plaques d'impression et les préparatifs 
nécessaires à l'impression proprement dite dureront 
jusqu'en novembre 1998. 
La date exacte de mise en circulation des billets en 
euro devra étre annoncée par la Banque centrale 
européenne avant le ler janvier 1999. Selon le 
scénario du passage à l'Euro adopté à Madrid (voir 
INN 28, p. 5-6), cette date doit étre au plus tard le 
ler janvier 2002.

Les pieces en euro et leur version francaise 


Huit piéces ont été prévues : 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50 
CENT (ou 1/2 EURO), ainsi que 1 et 2 EURO, soit au 
cours actuel environ 0,065; 0,13; 0,33; 0,65; 1,3 

3,25; 6,50 et 13 FF ou 0,005; 0,01; 0,026; 0,052 

0,1; 0,26; 0,52 et 1,04 DM). Chacune des huit pieces 
comportera un revers commun à tous les pays de 
l'Union avec la valeur faciale de la pièce en cent 
(1/100 d'euro) ou en euro et un droit “national” dont 
le theme propre à chaque pays sera entouré de 12 
étoiles. Sur la piece francaise est prévue la mention 
R(épublique) F(rancaise). 

Les caractéristiques techniques (alliage, couleur 

tranche) n'ont pas encore été définitivement arrétées 
par le Conseil des Ministres de l'Économie et des 
Finances de l'Union européenne (ECOFIN). En 
principe elles devraient étre les suivantes: 1 et 2 Euro 

pieces bimétalliques jaunes et argentées, 10, 20 et 50 
cent, pièces jaunes ou argentées, 1, 2 et 5 cent, 
couleur cuivre rouge. Elles présenteront le maximum 
de garanties contre la contrefacon et leur utilisation 
sera aussi pratique que possible avec une attention 
particuliére portée à leur reconnaissance par les mal- 
voyants

des Finances francais, le 17 juin 1996 et clos le 15

TRÉSORS/HOARDS 


Le trésor de monnaies normandes et francaises 
d'Allifae (Campanie, ХПе siècle) 


M iu jour dans un mausolée romain de la cite 
antique d'Allifae au cours des fouilles dirigées par 


Floran Miele de la Surintendance art héologique de 


Naples, ce trésor est l'un des rares de cette période 
mis au jour en contexte archéologique et conservé 
lans son intégralité. Les indications données ici après 
une premiere étude rapide sur photos sont 


provisoires et bien sür susceptibles de corrections et 





compléments. Il comprend 4 taris de Roger 11, Amalfi 
postérieurs à la réforme de 1140 et 630 monnaies 
d'argent ainsi qu'une croix. Parmi les monnaies de 
l'Italie normande un ducat (ducalis ) de Roger Il et 


des dénominations inférieures, dont un tiers de ducat 


et deux quarti di tercenari de Guillaume 11 (1166 





1189), sans doute les plus tardive qui datent 
l'enfouissement, Les monnate italiennes sont 
représentées par un nombre non négligeable d'i 


des ateliers de Lucques, de Pavie (avec les pieces le 





plus anciennes du trésor, d'Otton ler à Henri Ill, Xe 


s.), et méme de Vérone (chose rare en Italie du Suc 
Plus des deux tiers du trésor sont constitués par des 
provinois francais associés à des deniers de 
nombreux autres ateliers francais des Xle et Xlle 
siecles (Gien, Sancerre, Souvigny, Melle, Anger 
Chartres, Chateaudun, Troyes, Valence, Le Puy 
Orléans, Melgueil, ces derniers particulièrement 





nombreux). La trouvaille s'apparente en partie à celle 


de Montescaglioso (MT) composée de 876 ex. dont 


81 tiers de ducat de Roger 11, 654 provinois et de 


monnaies de quelques uns des ateliers presents 
Allifae (Pavie, Lucques, Troyes). Mais l'association 
inconnue jusqu'ici de monnaies d'or et d'argent dans 
le trésor d'Allifae, son importance numérique et la 
diversité de sa composition en font un nouveau 
document de grande importance pour l'histoire de la 





circulation monétaire dans l'Italie normande de la 
seconde moitié du Xlle siecle

The treasure of Sroda Slaska, south-west Poland 

On June 8th 1985 while digging foundations of a 
uilding, a hoard containing silver coins was found at 
Sroda Slaska, a town in Lower Silesia. The hoard 
consists of: Bohemia, Wenceslaus 11 (1283-1305), 
Prague grossi (46); John of Luxembourg (1311-1346), 
Prague grossi (3715), Meissen, Frederick 11 (1323- 
1349), grossi (6) and 4 uncertain fragments 

On May 24th 1988 another discovery was made very 
close to the place where the first hoard had been dug 
out. This time a hoard of royal jewellery, gold and 
silver coins was found. Unfortunately the latter hoard 
had been scattered and it took some time before all 
the items, the coins and the golden valuables, such as 
a gold crown with eagles, a brooch, two pairs of 
pendants, a bracelet (?), three rings and a piece of 
decorative gold band were recovered. According to 
one hypothesis the crown belonged to Blanche de 
Valois, the first wife of Charles IV (1346-1378). The 
second hoard consists of the following coins: Silesia - 
Legnica, Venceslaus | (1342-1364), florin (1). Austria 
Albert II (1330-1358), florin (1). Bohemia, Venceslaus 
I (1283-1305), Prague grossi (98); John of 
Luxembourg (1311-1346), Prague grossi (3824) 
florins (2), heller of Wroctaw /?/ (1). Burgundy, Eudes 
V (1315-1350), florin (1). Guigues VIII, Dauphin of 
Viennois, (1319-1333), florin (1). Florence, florins (9) 
lungary, Charles Robert (1307-1342), florins (12) 
ouis | (1342-1382), florins (11). Meissen, Frederick 11 
(1323-1349), grossus (1). Venice, Francis Dandolo 
(1329-1339), zecchino (1) 

When the scattered hoard from 1988 was brought 
ogether, it turned out that there were also two Prague 
grossi of Charles IV (1346-1378) and three Prague 
grossi of Wenceslaus IV (1378-1419). The connection 
of these coins with the hoard is unclear though - they 
must have been accidentally put together. | treat the 
tinds from 1985 and 1988 as one hoard because it is 
very likely that the items belonged to one person. As 
tor quantity the hoard is one of the biggest of the 





grossi period. It consists of 7734 coins, 39 of which 
are gold ones. The hoard must have been concealed 
after the year 1350 (approx.). The artistic and 
historical importance of the roval jewellery of Sroda 


Slaska ranks it among the most interesting twentieth

Treves, exposition sur les monnaies carolingiennes 
Le 16 février 1997 a été inaugurée au Rheinisches 
Landesmuseum une exposition consacrée aux 
monnaies carolingiennes entre Meuse et Rhin, 
intégrée à l'expostion de monnaies romaines, oü l'on 
peut voir notamment le fameux trésor de plus de 
2500 aurei découvert à Treves en 1993 (cf. INN 23, 
1993, p. 3, dans un choix élargi apres une premiere 
étude) et celui trouvé en 1989 à Niederbieber, 
constitué de 1942 deniers et d'un antoninien enfouis 
en 236. L'extension carolingienne comprend des 
monnaies issues de l'atelier de Treves et une 
sélection de l'important trésor mis au jour en 1956 à 
Pilligerheck, qui est rendu accessible au public pour 
la premiere fois. La piece centrale de cette nouvelle 
partie de l'exposition est une monnaie carolingienne 
en or, frappée à Arles, provenant des fouilles récentes 
de la “Königspfalz” (palais) d'Ingelheim . Lors de 
l'inauguration de l'exposition, le Dr Hans-Peter 
Kuhnen, directeur du Musée, présenta le nouveau 
guide du Cabinet des médailles, dü au Dr Karl-Josef 
Gilles (voir Publications, p. 00), qui a aussi organisé 
l'exposition.

Exhibition of Islamic coins in the Alhambra 

The exhibition "Monedas andalusías en la Alhambra" 
has been organized by the Patronato de la Alhambra 
with the collaboration of the “Haus der Kulturen der 
Welt" of Berlin: It will be open from 14 March to 31 
August 1997 in the Palace of Carlos V, inside the 
Alhambra de Granada. The scientific curators are T. 
Ibrahim and Alberto Canto. 

The exhibition includes material coming from the 
Museum of Arte Islámico de Granada, Museo 
Arqueológico Nacional de Madrid, Museo Casa de la 
Moneda de Madrid, Museo Arqueológico de 
Córdoba, Universidad Autónoma de Madrid, Ayt?. 
de Alcalá la Real (Jaén, Spain) and private 
collections. 

The exhibition is designed in two parts (with an 
introduction to the Islamic coinages); the first is a 
chronological review of the Islamic issues in the 
Iberian Peninsula from the conquest to the end of the 
Islamic presence in Spain, with the Kingdom of 
Granada (1492). Every section (Conquest and

Emirate, Caliphate, Taifas, Almoravids, Almohads and 
Nasrids of Granada) has a set of exhibition case 
texts and maps. The second part entitled "Usos de la 
moneda" (the use of money) gives a selection of 
Arabic historical sources (translated) with information 
about the links between the State, the population 
and the coin and related artifacts. There are text 
about taxes, the minting of coins (ingots, blanks, false 
coins, coin weights), hoards and jewels (Haza del 
Carmen, Córdoba, Alcalá la Real), the alteration of 
coins (clipped, cut, broken coins, imitations...) and 
finally a section of historiography about studies in 
Islamic coinage in Spain from the 18th century to the 
1930s (books, prints, photographs, manuscripts,

Le projet de publier les monnaies sassanides des

CNRS (France) et l'Osterreichische Akademie der 
Wissenschaften. Le premier fascicule (Ardashir | - 
Ohrmazd 11) est attendu en 1998. 
Das Projekt setzt sich zum Ziel, die Bestánde 
sasanidischer Münzen aus den Sammlungen des 
Münzkabinetts von Berlin, Brüssel, Paris und Wien zu

Das orientalische Münzkabinett in Jena 


Neue Aktivitàten um eine alte Sammlung 
Jenas vielfáltige Schátze blieben lange verborgen, 
nicht nur der Öffentlichkeit, sondern auch der 
Fachwelt. Einer davon ist das Orientalische 
Münzkabinett. Die Universitát Jena besitzt die 
drittgrößte öffentliche deutsche Sammlung 
orientalischer Münzen. Im 19. Jahrhundert stellte das 
Orientalische Münzkabinett ein einzigartiges 
Zentrum für Islamische Numismatik dar. Bis kurz 
nach dem Ersten Weltkrieg bestand es in 
Personalunion mit dem Orientalischen Seminar. 
Nach siebzigjáhriger Vakanz wurde im Jahr 1994 der 
Lehrstuhl für Semitische Philologie und 
Islamwissenschaft mit Prof. Dr. Norbert Nebes neu 
besetzt und 1994 kam als Assistent Dr. Stefan 
Heidemann hinzu. Seitdem wird das Orientalische 
Münzkabinett als Forschungsinstrument wieder- 
aufgebaut. 
Die Sammlung wird zerstreut 
Nach dem Weggang des letzten Direktors des 
Orientalichen Seminars im Jahr 1919 blieb das 
Großherzoglich orientalische Münzkabinett für über 
sieben Jahrzehnte verwaist. Die Sammlung wurde in 
der Folgezeit getrennt, Blei- und Zinnmünzen dem 
Zerfall preisgegeben, die Inventare zur Entlagerung 
an das Thüringische Hauptstaatsarchiv geschickt. 
Unsachgemäße Transporte warfen die Münzen 
durcheinander. Am 15. Mai 1939 wurden vier 
Fünftel, der Soret'schen Sammlung an das groß- 
herzogliche Haus aufgrund von Vermögens- 
regelungen zurückgegeben. 
Der Neubeginn 
Seit 1994 hat die Wiederherstellung begonnen. Die 
verlorengeglaubten Akten und wissenschaftliche 
Korrespondenz wurden wieder aufgefunden. 
Verschollenen Sammlungsteilen wurde mit Erfolg 
nachgegangen. Die ersten auswärtigen 
Wissenschaftler konnten die Sammlung schon in 
Augenschein nehmen. Da sich in den neunziger 
Jahren an mehreren alten Sammlungen Aktivitäten im 
Bereich der islamischen Numismatik entfalteten, fand 
im Februar 1996 in Jena eine Tagung “Islamische 
Numismatik in Deutschland- eine Bestands- 
aufnahme” statt, an der die Leiter und Bearbeiter der 
in Deutschland aktiven Sammlungen aus Dresden, 
Frankfurt/M, Göttingen, Marburg und Rostock 
teilnahmen. Es ist für die Zukunft die Aufgabe, das 
Münzkabinett wieder als modernes 
wissenschaftliches Arbeitsinstrument zur historischen 
Forschung auferstehen zu lassen.

In March 1996, the Teyler Museum opened a new 
section, including three new show cases, which will 
be used for small exhibitions on particular themes 
This is an addition to the existing 28 show cases in 
which an outline is shown of more than 2000 vears

The HSBC Money Gallery was opened to the public 
on 31 January 1997 by HRH Prince Richard, Duke of 
Gloucester (a Trustee of the Museum appointed by 
the Queen and with special responsibility for the 


Department of Coins and Medals). This long-standing 


but very costly project of the Department of Coins 
and Medals has finally 


been realised thanks to the

partnership developed with HSBC Holdings — the 
biggest UK financial and banking company (owning, 
for example, the Midland Bank) which has extensive 
interests throughout the world. Gallery 68, located 
on the Museum's upper floor, on a major route 
around the Museum, provides a framework within 
which to redevelop the successful ideas of the 1986 
exhibition on Money: from Cowrie Shells to Credit 
Cards.. Its long rectangular shape has influenced the 
design of the display. It is divided in three 
chronological sections: from the earliest times to AD 
600, from AD 600 to AD 1700, and from 1700 to the 
present day. Within each of the three main sections 
the exhibition presents money from all over the 
world in a thematic way; cases are devoted toMoney 
Used and Abused, What Were These coins Worth?, 
and The Mystique of Money, using material from 
across the world and incorporating non-numismatic 
pieces from the collections of the other departments 
of the Museum. There are also seven freestanding 
cases covering, e.g., the manufacture of coins and 
banknotes. Altogether the exhibition includes some 
5000 objects, from ancient Sumerian cuneiform 
tablets to the new British £ 2 coin (placed in the 
exhibition by Kenneth Clarke, the last British 
Chancellor of the Exchequer) or ‘mondex’ cards. 

The opening of the exhibition has been accompanied 
by an educational programme for children. Over the 
next year the Museum will be developing an 
interactive CD-Rom on the same themes, aimed at 
the ‘entertainment’ audience, which will include 
some 2000 images, with several activities (‘games’). It 
will be released in spring 1998.

Edinburgh acquires a unique Scottish gold coin 
featuring a unicorn 


The National Museums of Scotland have acquired 
the only known specimen of a Scottish gold half- 
unicorn of James IV (1488-1513), Stewart type 11*. 
Formerly part of the Bute, Hird and Douglas 
collections, this coin bears the otherwise unrecorded 
reverse type of a letter | within a circle on the centre 
of a sun of 14 wavy rays. The coin was purchased 
with the assistance of a generous grant from the 
Heritage Lottery Fund. 

Gold coins bearing on the obverse a unicorn 
supporting a shield of the arms of Scotland were first 
struck for James Ш (1460-88). Under James 111 and 
James IV unicorns were valued at 18 shillings Scots 
and half-unicorns at 9 shillings. They were also 
struck early in the reign of James V (1513-42) and 
valued at 20 shillings and 10 shillings respectively. 
All unicorns and half-unicorns, apart from the single 
type II* specimen, bear on the reverse a large wavy 
12-pointed star superimposed on a cross fleury.

New coins and medals gallery in Glasgow 


On November 13 a new permanent gallery with 
extensive display in a'study-like” atmosphere was 
opened at the Hunterian Museum. The display 
includes some 2000 objects, predominantly drawn 
from the founding collection of Dr William Hunter, a 
collection which was formed over a very short time 
(1770 to Hunter's death 1783) but remains one of the 
best in the world, not least for the super quality of the 
pieces it contains. 

The exhibition is structured around the strengths of 
the collection, and its core consists of 4 sections 
devoted to Greek, Roman, Medieval (including 
Scottish) and Medals (the last one of the 
unappreciated strengths of the collection. Around 
this core the subject is introduced with sections on 
'primitive money’ (emphasis on the quotation marks!) 
and coin manufacture; there are also sections for DIY 
identification, Scottish communion tokens, and 
modern European currency (including a copy of the 
Maastricht treaty). A final part of the exhibition is 
intended for changing display 

The design of the exhibition is varied, and uses cases 
of a number of different designs, ranging from some 
used when the museum first opened in 1807 to 
modern ones made specially for the exhibition. 

There is much to see and enjoy here. Rarities like the 
gold noble of David II jostle with provocative 
reconstructions of the 30 pieces of silver (completed 
by a Roman nail from Inchtuthil!), or Roman bronzes 
depicting Antinous and the Colosseum. Throughout 
the exhibition, one is constantly reminded of the 
superb quality of the collection, though 
'archaeology' is also represented by some battered 
Roman bronzes from Scottish sites. 

This is a big and good exhibition. We are all in the 
debt of the Museums and Galleries Improvement

Opening of the new exhibitions 

In May 1996 the Royal Coin Cabinet moved to new 
premises in the Old Town opposite the Royal Palace. 
It marked the initial step in creating the first European 
museum of economy. On June 11 1997 the time had 
come to open the new exhibitions which have been 
in preparation for the last few years. At the opening 
ceremony King Carl XVI Gustaf struck a “coin” 
commemorating the event. It was struck using 
medieval technique and motifs based on the first 
dated Swedish coin struck in 1478. 





The vast exhibitions, 1.300 m?, cover not only the 
monetary history of Sweden, but also that of the 
entire world (including medals, the history of banks, 
savings), as well as covering the financial market 
with institutions like stock markets. A special 
exhibition is designed for children. 
Sweden has a long history of financial institutions. 
The first bank notes were issued in Sweden in 1661 
and Sveriges Riksbank is the oldest central bank in 
the world (1668)

However, temporary exhibitions will be a standard 
feature to ensure that the visitors will always have

“Freunde des Münzkabinetts Winterthur” 

Am 23. Januar 1997 organisierte der Verein “Freunde 
des Münzkabinetts Winterthur" erstmals einen 
Neujahrs-Apéro für seine Mitglieder; die 
Veranstaltung soll zu einer jáhrlichen Tradition 
werden. Der Konservator des Münzkabinetts gab bei 
dieser Gelegenheit einen kurzen Überblick über die 
Aktivitäten des vergangenen Jahres. In einer kleinen 
Sonderausstellung wurden gleichzeitig wichtige 
Neuerwerbungen den Mitgliedern präsentiert. 

Der Verein, im Februar 1996 gegründet, zählt 
mittlerweile über 100 Mitglieder. Er unterstützt die 
Tätigkeit des Münzkabinetts mit finanziellen 
Beiträgen, Veranstaltungen und Öffentlichkeitsarbeit; 
mittelfristig sind auch Publikationen geplant. Am 5. 
Juni 1997 hält der Verein seine erste

Winterthur, Münzkabinett und Antikensammlung 

Im Januar 1997 konnte das Münzkabinett eine 
hervorragende Spezialsammlung von Münzen der 
Stadt Zug aus dem Besitz von Edwin Tobler 
(Nürensdorf) erwerben. Die insgesamt 266 Münzen 
beinhalten umfangreiche Serien von Kleinmünzen, 
an denen die Münzprägung der Stadt Zug besonders 
reich ist. Die bisher schon bedeutenden Bestände an 
Zuger Münzen im Winterthurer Münzkabinett 
werden durch diese Neuerwerbung beinahe 


verdoppelt.

Margildis SCHLUTER (1920-1997) 

Nach kurzer schwerer Krankheit verstarb am 
2.3.1997 Dr. Margildis Schlúter. Die Verstorbene war 
von 1956 bis 1981 Kustodin fúr Numismatik am 
Kestner-Museum in Hannover. Frau Schlúter, 
geboren 1920, prágte das Museum durch gelungene 
Ausstellungen und fundierte Bestandskataloge.

Philip Grierson's three medals 

Philip GRIERSON received on 19 April 1997 the 
Ehrenpreis 1997 of the Gesellschaft für Internationale 
Geldgeschichte in Frankfurt a.M., on 23 April the 
Gold Medal of the Society of Antiquaries of London, 
on 27 May the Sanford Saltus Medal of the British 
Numismatic Society. 


The Huntington Medal Award for 1997 was 
presented in the ANS on March 15 1997 to the 
Swedish scholar Dr Ulla WESTERMARK well known 
for her work on hellenistic coins, coins of Greek 
Sicily and of the early Macedonian kings, Director of 
the Royal Coin Cabinet in Stockholm between 1979 
and 1983 and responsible for the INC Committee of 
the Sylloge Nummorum Graecorum since 1986. 

F. DE CALLATAY, C. DEKESEL and T.V. BUTTREY 
were elected Corresponding Members of the 
American Numismatic Society.
